SPARK readings with Doug Nicholls

Marx Memorial Library is delighted to announce a series of readings from fiction writers considered on the left. Creative writing has always mirrored and energised our movement, from Shakespeare to AL Kennedy. Each month a fiction writer, dramatist or poet will read from current work and discuss their writing processes with the audience. These sessions are ideal for avid readers as well as writers. Do bring along questions and an open mind.

Doug Nicholls' poetry includes the full-length collection 'Speaking Tools' (1975-2005), and a new version of Lugalbanda (lover of the seed) a 5000 year old saga poem that speaks profoundly to our times.

'Beautifully moving us from our distant past, our poetic ancestor in the land of the first agriculture, city states, poetry, writing, architecture...remind us of what is most human and therefore most social.'

Doug is also the general Secretary of the General Federation of Trade Unions with a long and distinguished history in the Labour Movement.  His political and cultural internationalism has informed his poetry.
